Start of project “Pets and their care”.

On March 23rd the project “Pets and their care” started at the St. Anthonius School. Volunteers brought big boxes, shaped like dogs and full of materials to educate young children and teach them in a fun way how to take care of animals. For the period of one week the teachers will guide them on this topic and use a play dog, cat or rabbit to practice daily care. The following week volunteers will visit the school with live pet animals. This proved to be great success at the Prinses Margrietschool where the project was executed last year as a pilot project.

Complaint investigator Gregory Everts receives his certificate.

After the inauguration of the Animal Ambulance, which took place on March 8th Gregory Everts received his certificate. Gregory passed the exam to become an Extra-ordinary Police Officer after having followed an intensive nine month course, organized by Zemog Security Training BV. Clarson Gomez, coordinator of the course, was kind enough to sponsor this course for two shelter employees. Gregory succeeded and has already started his tasks as complaint investigator. After having been officially appointed by the Minister of Justice, Gregory will also have the authority to report offences to the public prosecutor.

He will join forces with Glen Aniceta, authorized Extra-ordinary Police Officer, who has been serving the Dierenbescherming for four years as a voluntarily complaint investigator. Glen, who has a full time job with the government, investigates complaints of neglect and cruelty after working hours but is unable to manage the rapidly increasing amount of complaints received alone.
We congratulate Gregory and wish him a lot of patience, diplomacy, wisdom and strength to execute this difficult task.

Rescued and safe at home!

Rexige came to the shelter when he was a tiny baby of only three weeks. Volunteers Kim and Robin took him home to give him everything that a small motherless puppy needs: proper care, several puppy feedings per day, lots of love and attention. Rexige even received basic training to learn how to behave. When he was strong enough he came back to the shelter, a lively, happy little fellow that enjoys playing but now also walks perfectly on the leash. The good news is that he was quickly adopted and has a safe and secure home now!

We thank Kim and Robin and all our other shelter volunteers who regularly take puppies and kittens home to save their lives.

“Schurfje” the mangy roaming dog that was rescued

In February 2006 Wieneke Ruysenaars started to feed a group of roaming dogs in the neighborhood of the HATO caves, near the airport. After Wieneke left for Holland, her mother Marly (CSPA volunteer for many years) continued to feed them. Noting that the dogs were in very bad health she asked the Animal Shelter for help. The dogs were caught and unfortunately their physical condition was so bad that only one of them could be rescued. Marly called her protégée “Schurfje” (“Little Mangy” in English) Schurfje was in an advanced stage of mange, was very skinny and had a broken leg. She was treated in the shelter and after her broken leg healed she was adopted in April 2006. Wieneke and Marly recently visited the family that adopted Schurfje and were overcome with joy when they saw how beautiful Schurfje had become and how happy she is with her new owners.

Neuter campaign on Valentine’s Day successful!

In total 55 animals were registered for sterilization at the local veterinarians which is quite a success.
The participating vets were enthusiastic and consider this event around Valentine’s Day as a positive way to remind pet owners of their responsibilities. We hope to repeat this event next year.

Donation of an Animal ambulance!

Thanks to Loes Westerman a most welcome gift was received from Foundation Animal Ambulance Hilversum (the Netherlands): an animal ambulance. Arrangement of transportation from Holland to Curaçao was very complicated and expensive and it took a long time before the ambulance could be transported, but thanks to the perseverance of Loes and the financial support of two sponsors, the ambulance finally arrived in Curaçao. The first ambulance, donated by the Dutch Navy in 2000, was completely worn out after five years of intensive use, and whilst services were temporarily continued using pick-up trucks, this new ambulance makes for a much more efficient situation.

Dierenbescherming is most grateful that the ambulance service can soon be resumed and thanks Loes Westerman and the Foundation Animal Ambulance Hilversum for their support!

Story of a foundling

This sweet black and white girl was found on the street and was never retrieved from the shelter by her owner. Though she was very afraid when she joined us, she soon realized that there are people in the world who do care for animals. In the shelter she was fed and taken care of, hugged and stroked and has found nice playmates. Finally that special person arrived to adopt her and take her home and she will shortly travel back to Holland with her caring new owner.

JANUARY 23 - OVER 87 ANIMALS REGISTERED AS LOST OR FOUND SINCE THE FIREWORKS PERIOD!

Since the fireworks on New Year’s Eve, over 87 dogs were registered at the Animal Shelter as lost or found. The shelter personnel try to match the descriptions of the lost and found animals to reunite them with their owners but sadly most of the lost animals are probably still wandering the streets. 32 of the found animals were admitted to the shelter, nine were retrieved by their owner, one was adopted and one sadly died. 21 animals are still anxiously waiting for their owners at the shelter, and 14 animals temporarily stay at foster homes. An extensive media campaign via newspapers, radio stations and TV station took place to encourage pet owners to contact the shelter if their animal had gone missing but only a few animals were retrieved.
