UPDATE: Animal Shelter back to normal again
The catastrophic outbreak of distemper that took many lives caused a lot of distress and sadness amongst the shelter personnel and volunteers. Fortunately the measures that were taken to prevent an increase in victims proved to be successful. The shelter is open to the public again, homeless animals are accepted and the adoption promotion program has been resumed.
The enormous number of unwanted dogs dumped at the shelter during November and December has catastrophically resulted in an outbreak of Distemper, which has to date taken 36 lives. The source of the virus is unknown, but likely to be from animals imported onto the island which were already infected with the highly contagious disease.
Drastic measures have been taken to prevent an increase in victims: the shelter is closed to visitors, unwanted dogs cannot be accepted and dogs that remain in the shelter will not be offered for adoption until the situation is under control.
