During the school vacations groups of escorted children visit the shelter to see the animals and learn how to take care of animals in a responsible way. In 1997 Marijke Rigot started to visit schools with an educational program and later the schools and youth groups were invited to come to the shelter for a guided tour.

For the first time in its existence of almost 60 years the Animal Protection Society enjoys the benefit of an official office, which has been established in the Activity Center at Parera - the same premises as the Animal Shelter. For years the office was domiciled at the home of a Board member but over the past 20 years the activities of the Society have increased to such an extent that it has become necessary to employ a secretary and establish a secretariat in more formal office space.
In this building Board and Committee meetings as well as other activities take place. Schoolchildren and youth organizations visit the Activity Center to receive information on responsible pet ownership as part of a guided tour of the Shelter.
Grace Webster was employed to run this secretariat where she will provide information to the public, organize guided tours of the shelter and assist the Board with the organization of fundraising activities and projects in the field of information and education.
The dog was very skinny and at first looked as if she had a white coat with dark brown spots, but upon closer inspection, those dark spots turned out to be infestations of fleas. The poor dog was wearing a collar and must have had an owner, but not, it seems, one who cared about her welfare. Despite laughing and sneering from patrons of the nearby bar, the rescuer got out of her car to take the dog home. Once there, the rescuer named the dog Jacky and decided to try her hardest to nurse Jackie back to health. Firstly her flea and other parasite infestations needed to be treated, and a fortune was spent at the vets to achieve this, along with treatment for tick fever, anaemia and other medical conditions. Take a look at the photos … and at what just two weeks of love, attention, good food and medicine can do for a dog that was surely soon to be at death’s door. Jacky is happy, clean, with a shiny coat and has gained weight – her face tells you all you need to know.

Three stowaway kittens were found in an empty container that traveled from Bonaire to Curaçao. One of them unfortunately did not survive this crossing without food and water and there were fears for the lives of the other two. However, they were taken in at a foster home and named Bon and Bini (meaning 'welcome' in Papiamentu), where they fought for their lives. Happily, they are now both healthy little fellows, completely devoted to each other and we are looking for a home where both wil indeed be welcome and able to live the happy lives they deserve.
The unseparable brothers Bon & Bini.
Update: Thanks to publicity in the media ‘Bon & Biní’ were adopted and are now safe and sound with their new family!
Many visitors, in particular families with children, visited the Animal Shelter during the Open House which took place on Sunday August 17th. Children enthusiastically participated in a program specially set up for them: a search that guided them troughout the shelter, picking information on shelter activities and pet care. There was opportunity to play with the puppies, cuddle with the cats and kittens, a contest to guess the weight of shelter dog Whisky and a lucky dip in a 'grab barrel' to take home a little gift. Children loved having their photo taken with a painted face and a puppy in their lap. Several families decided to adopt one of the homeless animals and we are delighted that so many families did come back during the following week and formalize the procedure to take animals home!
What is the weight of shelter dog Whisky?
There was a lot of interest in the 'grab barrell'
Soft drinks and cookies were available at the bar, sponsored by local companies.

With the donation from the Oranje Casino the OPSC project (Operation Pet and Stray Control), which was unaffordable last year, can be resumed.
This project has as a main objective the education of the local populace about the importance of animal sterilization, and the provision of subsidized operations to ensure that the poorest families are able to take responsible care of their pets.
On July 1st employees of the Animal Shelter, volunteers and cruelty inspectors, visited the neighborhood of ‘Kustbatterij’ to distribute flyers informing the residents of the procedures to take place.
Endeavours will include education on appropriate daily care of animals; sterilization of two (or more) animals per family with only a small contribution towards cost, confinement of stray dogs and firm action against neglect and cruelty.
