“Animal welfare is the responsibility of the whole community”
Max Brandt, Member Society Development Manager of WSPA (World Society for the Protection of Animals) of the Regional Office for Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean recently paid a visit to Curaçao where he met with the Board of Dierenbescherming and also visited the Animal Shelter.
The organization has been criticized lately in the media by a small group of citizens about the method of euthanasia and for not practicing the ‘no kill’ policy.
Max stated that “Animal welfare is the responsibility of the whole community” and not of one organization alone. “If you’re not part of the solution you’re part the problem’, said Max. Criticism alone does not solve any problem. Max noted the amount of work undertaken by Dierenbescherming in spite of low manpower amongst the Board, personnel and volunteers. Not only the operation of the Animal Shelter but also sterilization programs, programs for the schools, the publication of posters and books about nature, but also the volunteers and shelter personnel who visit neighborhoods to help people, educating, for example, on how to combat parasites and mange. Max recommended commencement of an awareness campaign targeted at Curacao’s citizens to promote the wellbeing of animals. WSPA will give support in this respect, but the whole community must cooperate. Volunteers are particularly needed to assist with special projects. Dierenbescherming became a ‘Society Member’ of WSPA after the visit of regional manager Luis Carlo Sarmiento who visited Curaçao in 2000. In 2001 WSPA donated US$ 10,000 for the first Animal Ambulance during a seminar in Aruba that was attended by Dierenbescherming Board members.

On March 2 a new Mitsubishi-truck was presented to Dierenbescherming (Curaçao Society for the Protection of Animals) by representatives of Oranje Casino and Caribbean Motors. The truck will be used for the Neglect and Cruelty inspection and is a donation of Oranje Casino, the most visited casino online in the Netherlands.
Thanks to the Casino players who themselves choose the good cause to which they donate their bonus points this donation was made possible. Caribbean Motors cooperates by sponsoring all service charges and parts. This tremendous support enables the Neglect and Cruelty Inspection to continue its important ask: the daily inspection of and dealing with complaints about neglect and cruelty of animals.
